With Jose Mourinho now sacked, Hiddink will lead Chelsea to their game against Watford on Saturday. He has demanded desire from his players. A desire to push forward. This desire Hiddink said is the key to their being part of the first team.
Jose Mourinho, despite being the man responsible for Chelsea’s Premier League title last season was earlier shown the door following a dismal run of form which now sees Chelsea battling to avoid relegation. Hiddink said he wanted an immediate turnaround.
Hiddink told reporters, “Even if your boss is only temporary, he can kick you around. I’m not going to be begging them [the players] to perform.”
“They have a profound obligation to perform. They are here at a big club. They are well paid. They must have the heart full of the desire of an amateur.”
“If they don’t have that desire, then I will say, ‘Thank you very much, goodbye’. I don’t need players who don’t have the desire.”“Last week they were one point off the relegation places which was frightening for everyone in the club.”
“I don’t know why they have not been performing. It’s difficult to judge. But I don’t want to know. I want to have a blank approach to them. I have to make my own decisions.”
I will continue in charge as long as I feel the desire for it: Hiddink
Hiddink has been appointed as the interim manager in charge till the month of May. Reports already suggest that Chelsea are on the lookout to hire Pep Guardiola who has announced his decision to leave Bayern Munich at the end of the season. But Hiddink is now concentrating on the job and might just as well stay beyond the month of May.
“It is a few years ago I was here in a similar situation. I have to feel inside my heart that I have that passion to work with the guys.”
“We said let’s go to May and then we’ll see what will happen. As long as I feel the desire, I will go on.”
“With Chelsea, it was a quick decision. I have the experience to know when even though the job is tough, I should go for it.”
“In the past, everything in this club was well organised. It’s still a warm club.”
Back in the year 2008, something similar had taken place. Luis Felipe Scolari was the then coach of Chelsea. He was sacked as he failed to deliver success and Hiddink was appointed as the interim boss. Hiddink was also the head coach of the Russian national team at the same time.
Chelsea lost just the one game in the league after Hiddink took charge and they went on to win the FA Cup that year beating Everton 2-1 at Wembley. However, it would seem the situation this time around is a little more grave.
