Pape Souare is enjoying the kind of season at Lille that guarantees the super powers in Europe will sit up and take notice of the Senegalese defender’s displays.

As we can see from his Performance Score Souare has been outstanding and it’s not just in the defensive department that the 23 year-old has shone. Attack wise Souare is more than willing to get forward and when you consider he’s scored the same number of goals as Evra and Baines have combined, it’s not hard to see why he could prove a tempting proposition for the United boss.

It would be misleading to say every facet of Souare’s performances puts Baines and Evra in the shade, as the two Premier League players have both created a superior number of chances to the Lille man’s ten.

One thing that Souare has over his England-based counterparts though is time; Evra is nearing the end of his career, while at 28 this is the very peak for Baines and one could argue that it’s all downhill for him from here. Souare’s performances have meant that Lille have been able to recover from the loss of the talented Lucas Digne– who left for Paris Saint Germain in the Summer- without any real problem; no mean feat considering how effective the young Frenchman had been for Les Dogues.

The main problem for United should they decide to pursue Souare, is the fact he’s recently signed a new deal keeping him at Lille until 2017. When you consider the money being touted for Baines though – believed to be around the £18-19 million mark, you have to wonder whether the French club could really turn down a similar offer for a left back who was loaned out to Reims last season. It might be too soon to tempt them in January but a Summer deal could be the answer for both clubs, with Evra still more than capable of filling his role until then.

Souare has all the tools to make him an effective successor to the Reds vice-captain and should United decide to keep Evra on for one more season, he could help the youngster settle at Old Trafford and learn from one of the finest left backs the club has ever seen.
