Skyelar Babineau from Massachusetts found out that she had thyroid cancer on Wednesday, and decided to tell her friends and “have a laugh” at the same time.

“I had made jokes prior to finding out about ‘making a cancer reveal’ expecting my results to be negative,” Babineau told Newsweek. “My friends and I have been using humor in attempts to keep this difficult time light for all of us.”

Thyroid cancer refers to a cancerous tumor or growth located within the gland. This type of cancer occurs in all age groups and is commonly diagnosed at a younger age than most other forms.

Women are three times more likely to develop thyroid cancer than men, and the American Cancer Society estimated that there would be around 43,800 new cases of thyroid cancer in the U.S. in 2022.

There are several types of thyroid cancer: papillary, follicular, medullary, anaplastic, and variants. Treatment includes surgery, radioactive iodine treatment, external beam radiation therapy, and chemotherapy.

In the video that has received more than 15 million views, Babineau and her friends are playing a game of Kahoot!, a Norwegian game-based learning platform that allows users to create their own multiple-choice quizzes that can be accessed via a web browser.

Alongside the video in the caption, Babineau wrote: “I had to commit to the bit.”

While the group plays the quiz game, the question on the screen appears reading: “True of false, Skye has cancer.” With just seconds to answer, her friends look a little taken aback and laugh as they answer on their own devices.

When the app reveals that the answer is in fact true, Babineau laughs and shouts: “I have cancer everyone!” as her friends burst into awkward laughter and shocked expressions.

“My friends initially were a little shocked as seen in the video, but some of them were expecting the positive results following how sick I’ve been,” explained Babineau. “They’ve all been super supportive and a great resource as I navigate this tough time.”

Babineau’s medical team performed a biopsy and diagnosed thyroid cancer, which she will now begin treatment for.

She hopes that sharing her story will encourage others to advocate for their own health. “If I hadn’t been so adamant about getting checked out, we wouldn’t have caught my cancer,” she said. “I’m not sure yet about my stage, but I am definitely going to beat it.”

Babineau now faces a few months of intensive treatment, but is feeling positive and said that “it’ll all be worth it by the end.”

“I mainly wanted to share on TikTok because I thought it was a funny video with no expectations of it going viral,” Babineau explained. “I figured my friends and family would see it and have a laugh about a tough situation.”

The video has received millions of views since being posted on Wednesday, and TikTok users have rushed to praise the unusual way of announcing the news to her friends.

“As a cancer survivor I approve,” wrote one commenter. “Gotta keep it light and fun, otherwise everyone is walking on eggshells around you.”

“This is genuinely hilarious,” posted another commenter, while one viewer wrote: “Is Gen Z…ok?”

“This is the twisted humor that got me through my diagnosis,” commented another cancer survivor. “Wish I had thought my reveal through more after seeing this.”

Babineau was also thrilled with the reaction to her video: “It was wicked unexpected, but I feel like seeing how many other people are able to share similar experiences with me in the comments opens the door for more people to share their stories. I knew nothing about my cancer until I had it.”
