As a result, Shin Megami Tensei 5 saw healthy sales last year, selling over 800,000 copies worldwide. It was even stated during a meeting with Sega’s shareholders that Sega was satisfied with the marketing and sales status of the game. While good news for fans, Sega also stated that it wishes to give some of its brands more worldwide recognition and expand its franchises. This expansion sentiment is reflected by a statement from Shin Megami Tensei 5’s director.

Shin Megami Tensei 5 dreictor Shigeo Komori gave some insights into the development of Shin Megami Tensei 5. One of the first goals that he and the team at Atlus was looking to accomplish in this iteration of Shin Megami Tensei was to focus on the graphics. This includes giving the demons and main characters a distinctive look. This was on top of refining the series’ staple mechanics like the battle system, demon negotiation, and demon fusion. According to Komori, this helped create a game that could appeal to a wide demographic.

Komori then addresses that Atlus’ franchise has fanbases in both Japan and overseas, which he hopes to capitalize on. He states that to expand the IP, future titles will be delivered to a wide range of players, hoping to release both brand-new and revivals of past Shin Megami Tensei games. Komori closes out the interview by promising that he and his team are looking to step up to the task in order to achieve this task.

Sega has previously stated more of Atlus’ previously released titles will be ported to other platforms, due to the massive success of the PC port of Persona 4 Golden. This can be seen with re-releases like this year’s multi-platform release of Persona 4: Arena Ultimax. In terms of revivals, Atlus also recently announced a sequel to Shin Megami Tensei: Soul Hackers, simply known as Soul Hackers 2. This sequel is also aimed to have a multi-platform release on a variety of consoles this year as well.

Shin Megami Tensei 5 is available now for Nintendo Switch.
