Rather than featuring traditional equipment, Shin Megami Tensei replaces weapons and armor wholesale with the Magatama system. Shin Megami Tensei III’s Magatama are divided into three variants, with Light types offering useful skills to the players. When it comes down to it, even the weakest Magatama are worth collecting.

Ankh

Ankh is a Healing based Magatama that voids Expel, but is weak to Death. Ankh is obtained by either parting with Pixie when you first reach Yoyogi Park or purchasing it from the Ginza Underpass Junk Shop for 2000 Macca. Ankh raises the following stats:

Strength +1 Magic +1 Vitality +4 Luck +2

Ankh teaches the following skills upon leveling up:

Dia | Lv. 5 Fast Retreat | Lv. 12 Media | Lv. 19

Ankh isn’t particularly useful in the grand scheme of things, but it’s a good fit for early-game Magic builds and all three skills are learned at a relatively fast pace. The extra Vitality also goes to good use early on.

Iyomante

Iyomante is a Debuff based Magatama that voids Mind and can be purchased from the Shibuya Junk Shop for 2000 Macca. Iyomante raises the following stats:

Strength +2 Vitality +2 Agility +2 Luck +3

Iyomante teaches the following skills:

Tarunda | Lv. 10 Sukunda | Lv. 13 Rakunda | Lv. 16 Life Aid | Lv. 36

Debuffs are always useful in Shin Megami Tensei III, and the fact Iyomante teaches three great ones before you so much as hit Lv. 20 is hard to ignore. Life Aid is also a fantastic passive skill, healing the player after every battle.

Narukami

Narukami is an Electric based Magatama that voids Electricity and is weak to Ice. The Magatama is obtained by beating Thor at the Mantra Army HQ. Narukami raises the following stats:

Strength +5 Magic +6

Narukami teaches the following skills:

Shock | Lv. 21 Elec Boost | Lv. 26 Anti-Elec | Lv. 30 Void Elec | Lv. 40

While Narukami’s stat bonuses are solid for either a Strength or Magic build, the learnable skills just aren’t useful enough to justify keeping the Magatama equipped through level ups.

Nirvana

Nirvana is an Expel based Magatama that voids Expel and is weak to Death. Nirvana can be purchased from the Asakusa Junk Shop for 15000 Macca, raising the following stats:

Strength +1 Magic +1 Vitality +2 Agility +2 Luck +8

Nirvana teaches the following skills:

Violet Flash | Lv. 32 Anti-Expel | Lv. 33 Divine Shot | Lv. 41 Void Expel | Lv. 56

With a medium critical rate chance, Divine Shot is an excellent skill for Strength builds and extra Luck is always handy considering it’s bound to be your most underdeveloped stat.

Geis

Geis is a Healing based Magatama that voids Expel and is unlocked by completing the Asakusa Puzzle Boy’s game in a single sitting (much easier said than done). Geis raises the following stats:

Strength +2 Magic +2 Vitality +4 Agility +4 Luck +4

Geis teaches the following skills:

Diarama | Lv. 37 Life Refill | Lv. 39 Tetraja | Lv. 41 Mediarama | Lv. 44 Diarahan | Lv. 47 Mana Refill | Lv. 51

Geis is a must have for any Magic build. Mana Refill replenishes MP while you’re walking and Tetraja raises shields around the party that reflects any physical or magical attacks. Just don’t expect the puzzle game to be a breeze.

Kamurogi

Kamurogi is a Physical based Magatama that voids Physical attacks, Expel, and Death, but is weak to Fire, Ice, Electricity, and Force. The Magatama can be purchased from the Asakusa Tunnels Junk Shop for 45000 Macca. Kamurogi raises the following stats:

Strength +8 Agility +4 Luck +4

Kamurogi teaches the following skills:

Blight | Lv. 45 Life Gain | Lv. 46 Iron Claw | Lv. 48 Retaliate | Lv. 54 Oni-Kagura | Lv. 64

Retaliate and Oni-Kagura are very useful skills for Strength builds, and are worth pursuing, but keep in mind that Kamurogi’s weakness spread makes it something of a gamble to keep equipped. The massive buff in Strength is useful, but so many weaknesses will come back with a vengeance.

Adama

Adama is an Electricity based Magatama that Reflects Electricity, Resists Expel & Death, and is Weak to Force. Adama is unlocked by defeating Albion in Amala Temple and raises the following stats:

Strength +3 Magic +2 Vitality +8 Agility +2 Luck +2

Adama teaches the following skills:

Bolt Storm | Lv. 60 Mana Surge | Lv. 62 Elec Drain | Lv. 67

Adama is fairly useful for Magic builds, especially thanks to Mana Surge, but it’s otherwise not worth holding onto as your main late-game Magatama.

Sophia

Sophia is a Healing based Magatama that voids Expel and resists Death. Sophia can be purchased from the Asakusa Tunnels Junk Shop for a staggering 120000 Macca and raises the following stats:

Strength +1 Magic +2 Vitality +5 Agility +7 Luck +4

Sophia teaches the following skills:

Thunderclap | Lv. 45 Samrecarm | Lv. 57 Drain Attack | Lv. 59 Mediarahan | Lv. 63 Holy Wrath | Lv. 70

Easily the best Light based Magatama, Sophia is very useful for Magic builds thanks to skills like Samrecarm and Mediarahan alone.
