It is a stunning follow-up to the extensive article you published in the May 29 issue. It’s time politicians realized that concern about use of the death penalty is not limited to a few fringe groups, but that mainstream America is questioning this barbaric, outdated and nonsensical approach to criminal justice....

Obviously it’s an imperfect analogy. The government should be more businesslike, but it is not a business. It can never be. The nature of democracy – and of politics – does not allow it. Most CEOs wouldn’t make good presidents, and vice versa. And the other candidates don’t easily fit the comparison. By corporate custom, Bob Dole is about a decade too old to be selected to run any major American company except in an emergency....

Lawmakers from both parties have backed the Biden administration’s threat to impose sanctions on China if it bolsters Russia’s military. But Beijing is a greater threat to our security and economy than Moscow could ever be—and has committed a long series of human rights abuses.
